Head of International Tax

Full-time, UK-based

Flexible on Location. Requirement to be in Derby 2-3 days per week. Some international travel required.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Group Tax team, with a specific focus on the Group’s international tax affairs acting as the Group’s global contact for international tax matters for over 40 territories (but not the US or Germany).

The role reports to the EVP Group Tax & Customs and will be part of the Tax Leadership Team and is required to work and collaborate closely with tax specialists and other professionals across the global organisation.

A key aspect of the role is to drive value and minimise tax risk across the Group. This role will also be the primary business partner to the Civil business, working with the Civil CFO and Civil finance leadership, and primary contact on M&A activity. This role will provide expertise to support informed decision making.

Your needs are as unique as you are. Hybrid working is a way in which our people can balance their time between the office, home, or another remote location.  It’s a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement.  As a minimum we’re all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week.

What you will be doing

  • Responsible for leading and developing the international tax team, ensuring that the team are providing the required support and business partnering

  • As a tax leader, role model the Rolls-Royce behaviours and leadership expectations and to play a key role in the leadership across the tax team contributing to team development and functional strategy

  • Responsible for ensuring the Group meets its global tax compliance obligations in all overseas locations (other than the US and Germany). This will involve working across the Rolls-Royce tax team with our transfer pricing specialists, Corporate & Compliance tax teams, international tax teams and finance teams, as well as liaising with our external advisor network

  • Business partnering the Civil business to ensure tax matters are understood, opportunities are sought and captured, and risks are minimised

  • Business partnering the M&A team to ensure tax matters are understood in the context of M&A activity, opportunities are sought, and risks are minimised

  • Managing global tax disputes and audits including engagement with the regional tax teams and external advisers and engaging with local tax authorities as required

  • Advising the businesses on managing the tax implications and risks associated with complex cross border transactions relating to new and existing business. Working with our global advisor network to source relevant tax advice when required

  • Monitoring international legislative developments, evaluating implications and application to the Group, ensuring that relevant stakeholders are aware of these developments, implications and application

  • Liaising with and supporting tax teams around the world to resolve any international tax issues

  • Managing international elements of group reporting and forecasting and supporting the EVP Group Tax & Customs with Group tax disclosure policy

  • Actively engaging in ongoing improvement initiatives with a view to improving processes

  • Overseeing the training of businesses and functions to ensure tax risks are understood and appropriately managed

  • Managing ad hoc projects and advice in support of EVP Group Tax & Customs

In addition for this role, we are looking for someone who has:

  • Degree level qualification or equivalent

  • Professional tax qualification or equivalent

  • Significant post qualified experience

  • Experience working in international tax in practice or industry at a senior level, including developing and driving the international tax strategy

  • Experience of business partnering

  • Experience leading and developing tax professionals and managers

  • Experience managing dispute resolutions ideally dealing with tax authorities in APA and MAP situations.

  • Strong business acumen

  • A team player with an ability to liaise and influence across multiple jurisdictions, businesses and functions.

  • Proven communication skills, including a strong ability to explain complex tax issues to non-tax specialists.

  • Strong organisational skills and problem-solving abilities

  • Achievement oriented and enthusiastic
